Surbiton based Indian restaurant Maya has received a runners-up place in the 2010 British Curry Awards.  This is the second year in a row that Maya has come a runner-up in the best newcomer category.

In Surbiton we are blessed with several top quality Indian restaurants.  We would like to congratulate Maya on yet another great result; even if they didn’t quite take the top award this year.

The 6th annual British Curry Awards were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane.  The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, the Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, was the Chief Guest. Known to be a keen curry lover, Mr Pickles paid rich tribute to the contribution the British curry industry is making to the national economy and the local community. He said, "Curry has a huge place in our national affections. The tikka masala is more British than fish and chips”.

Hosted by TV comedian Justin Lee Collins, the event was attended by well over 1200 people.  Almost 3,500 restaurants – more than one-third of the UK total – took part in the awards, making this the most popular awards yet.

Maya’s proud owner Shamim Malek said “On behalf of myself and the team at Maya I would like to thank our Customers and the British Curry Awards for recognising all our hard work”.

I have heard some excellent reviews of this curry house. I do tend to go to my local curry house for convenience and it is very good. However, I'd love to give Maya a try. I presume they do takeaways too?
