The Rubicon is the trendy looking bar in Maple Road – you know the one. I must admit that it’s always looked a little too trendy for me to brave going into in the evening, other than for coffee during the Farmers’ Market. Having said that I have been intrigued by the effort they put in to come up with different entertainment and they are definitely worth supporting. The return of their Book Club looks to be another winner.
On the last Tuesday of each month Rubicon runs a unique ‘Meet the author’ book club. New and regular members welcome. Meet at 7:30pm, listen to the author and discuss relevant issues followed by a short break to indulge in some homemade canapés and replenish your drinks. This is followed by a Q&A session. Entrance and canapés £4.00, there is no need to book just turn up! The book is available from Rubicon and online.
The next book is ‘Roller Skaters and Wine Makers’ by Nick Leonard. Twenty-two tales from a California Caravan.
Thirty-something Londoner Nick Leonard spent two months living in a friend’s back yard in the city of San Luis Obispo on California’s Central Coast. Expecting a world of beach Boys lyrics and 90210 brats, Nick was completely unprepared for what he found – a California that belongs to Zombie flash mobs and Poly Dollies , marauding bears and a train spotting dragon, drag-wearing Mayhem and Bendy Bike John.
Roller Skaters and Wine Makers provides a sharply observed and humorous account of these distractions from a wholly Brit perspective.
