Wiggomania sweeps through Surbiton

Surbiton residents did their country proud yesterday by filling the streets and cheering on all of the competitors in the Olympic Cycling time trails. The cheering rose to spectacular levels when the British cyclists came through and we were paid off handsomely when Bradley Wiggins came in fastest to win a Gold Medal for Team GB. Chris Froome took an excellent Bronze medal for GB too.

Surbiton has really taken a shine to the Olympics. The Olympic flame saw the centre of Surbiton packed with people when it was carried through the streets. The riverside was also packed when the flame was taken to the opening ceremony a few days later.
We've been lucky enough to have two previous road cycling events nearby in Kingston and Hampton Court, but Wednesday was a bit special when the time trial came right through Surbiton on the Portsmouth Road.
As well as the flame and cyclists, we have a local man in the Team GB rowing team and three top players in the men's GB Hockey team. It's obvious from those people traveling from Surbiton station that quite a few local people are volunteering as Games Makers too. All in all, it's a fantastic time for sports, for London, for Great Britain and of course for Surbiton. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Thanks to Surbyman for the excellent photos.
