The Antelope pub in Surbiton has closed for two weeks for a major refurbishment.  The Antelope closed on Sunday evening and is not due to open again until Monday 23rd January.

The Maple Road pub is to undergo a refurbishment that will update the pub and perhaps take it slightly more up-market.  However, landlord Jerry is keen to make the point that it will remain a 'proper pub'.  We think it's great that the pub is getting a make-over, but not changing into a wine-bar or gastropub.  Surbiton is lucky to have a wide range of excellent drinking establishments, but we think it's important that there are 'old fashioned' pubs around.  The TVs will stay for the big sports games, as will the live music, but the big question is - will the pool table remain?

We understand that there will be a new bar, wooden floors, new butchers-block tables, a larger upper-level, some fixed seating at the rear and a newly paved garden area at the back.  The Greene King pub did undergo a mini-refurb a few years ago, but it was very minor compared to these new plans.  We look forward to seeing the newly fitted-out Antelope and wish Jerry the landlord all the best with his venture.  We reckon it will be a great success.

Keep checking out surbitonpeople.co.uk for any announcements on the opening date.  We will of course be reviewing the 'new pub' as soon as it re-opens.
