Surbiton filter beds - one day left

Kingston planning bosses have one day left to decide what to do with the development of the Surbiton Filter Beds.
An announcement on whether a major development is due tomorrow.
Over 60 new homes and a new marina are planned for the area on Portsmouth Road.
Campaigners including Friends of Seething Wells, Councillors and Kingston and Surbiton MP, Edward Davey have opposed the development.
The Energy Secretary dubbed the area the "Blue-Lung" of the Thames.
However, just before the weekend, Sport England withdrew its formal objection to the plans on the grounds that it was happy that all parties involved could work together.
It also said in a letter to the planning committee that the development would have no direct impact on any sporting facility.
The original objection from Sport England was to do with the impact on River Traffic.
People against the proposed development are being urged to contact Kingston Council Planning offices.

Why on earth are people so opposed to this development? At the moment the filter beds are just a mess. They have been for years and slowly becoming more and more derelict.
I can understand why people didn't want a supermarket on the site but residential development and a marina? Surely this is only good for the area? It is a former industrial site - nothing more and should be used for the benefit of people. Don't forget just the other side of the river is Hampton Court Park – open space that is actually usable.
