Surbiton Street Lights Axed?
By Surb_People | Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 18:20
Could central Surbiton's decorative streetlights be axed? The second stage of the Surbiton Town Centre Improvement strategy will see new street lighting in central Surbiton as the old lighting columns need to be replaced.

Is Surbiton set to lose streetlights like this...

For streetlights like this?
However, Kingston Council doesn't actually have the money to fund new street lights at the moment, so delays and/or cost cutting could occur. Surbiton currently has distinctive, Victorian-looking street lights, but there is a likelihood that similar replacement lights could be too expensive – or maybe they're not even wanted.
So far the Town Centre Improvement has seen Victoria Road resurfaced and some pavements and crossings improved. The next step includes new streetlights and the widening of Brighton Road on the approach to the traffic signals at Balaclava Road.
The fancy Surbiton streetlights do look a bit twee, but actually I quite like the fact that Surbiton his a bit different from other small town centres.
Do you like the current style of streetlight in central Surbiton? Or is it time that Surbiton got modern?

I agree with everyone here. Surbiton's period-style streetlights are highly distinctive and help define the town. But I really don't understand why they were only have such a limited life. They are not that old, after all. When Victorians like Isambard Kingdom Brunel built a structure it was made to last.

ReportWell the initial response seems to favour keeping Surbiton's streetlights as they are. On Twitter we have had the following responses so far: @MrsNoBags: Keep them if you can. They are distinctive. @popeyworld: Keep the lights! @suebradx: Don't let Surbiton become just another clone town. Save the lights! Don't forget that you can post on Surbitonpeople using your Twitter sign-on.

ReportWe should stick with the style of lights we have. There has been enough dumbing down on the shop fronts already. Modern does not make it better.
