The Press Room coffee house has opened their new Surbiton shop in Claremont Road and it's already causing quite a stir amongst the locals.  The shop has opened at number 5 Claremont Road, where Southern Brew used to be, and the extensive refurbishment has produced a stunning looking coffee shop that seems certain to find favour among local coffee connoisseurs.

This shop unit has seen three cafes come and go over recent years.  Whatever shop opened here, they never seemed to look comfortable or welcoming.  However, some clever thinking and lots of money has been spent on fitting out the shop with good looking and good quality furniture and fittings.  The counter has been enlarged, moved to the left and also looks great.  At the front of the shop is a new bar with trendy metal high stalls, which is ideal for (Surbiton!) people-watching.

We met with David, the owner of The Press Room.  He used to be the General Manager of John Lewis in Oxford Street, but has decided to work for himself with this new coffee shop in Surbiton, his home town.  David is passionate about good quality food & drink and has great eye for detail.  He loves to talk about everything that is sold in the shop and can tell you exactly where each item came from and the artisan companies that made them.

The coffee comes from Has Bean Coffee, a small company that buy from small farms who they know personally.  The hot chocolate contains a whole bar of handmade Morimba chocolate made with single origin cocoa from Venezuela.  Pastries are made from the famous Paul's bakery and cakes are made by the Exploding Cake Company from Devon.  They also have fabulous gourmet flavoured popcorn, handmade in England by Joe & Steph's.  You'll often get a taster of the popcorn when ordering your coffee.  They also sell filled baguettes and croissants, which are suitable for breakfast or lunch.

More than anything, they are proud of their coffee.  I'm not an expert on coffee, so look forward to receiving your reviews.  They also have a very large range of teas.  If there's something that you would like to see them stock, they are open to suggestions.

The coffee shop market is a packed market place in Surbiton.  However, with the recent introduction of the Pickled Pantry and now The Press Room, we have top quality cafes with individuality and different reasons to visit.  David, the new owner of the Press Room is very proud of his new coffee shop and of the new staff he's employed.  We have no doubt that this will be a big success.
