Surbiton Hill Road, a major route leading from Surbiton to Kingston is closed because of a gas leak spotted earlier this morning.  I've spoken to Southern Gas and this is what they have said...

"We were called to Surbiton Hill Road earlier today following reports of a gas leak. We have identified a number of small leaks in the gas main at the junction of Maple Road and Beaufort Road."

"Due to the particularly awkward location of the gas main, it has been necessary to temporarily close the road while we work to fix the leaks.

"Surbiton Hill Road is closed southbound from outside the Waggon and Horses pub to the junction of St Marks Hill and Lambert's Road. Traffic is being diverted via Maple Road, Claremont Road, St Marks Hill and into Ewell Road.

"Our team is working extended hours to complete the repair work as quickly as possible and minimise disruption to local residents. At this stage, we expect the works to take five days to complete.

"We would like to apologise to residents and road-users for the inconvenience and thank them for their patience while we complete these essential repairs."
