The publicity surrounding the opening of Surbiton's new Reptile Kingdom  continues with claims and counter-claims about whether John terry had agreed to open the new shop or not.  The shop had advertised that it was due to be opened by Chelsea FC star, John Terry, but he didn't turn up.

The fact that John Terry was billed to open the shop was enough to cause hundreds of people to turn up, hoping to meet him.  However, the disputed accusations made against John Terry the night before the opening, meant that the event was even more high profile.  The paparazzi were out in force.

After several hours of queuing, people started to demand answers.  First they were told that "He is running late" then a bit later after saying that they had spoken with John Terry, the story changed to "He is going to come, but he won't give a specific time".  When it was clear that Terry wasn't going turn up, the shop owners apologised, but strongly denied it that it had been a publicity stunt.

However, John Terry has denied he was due to attend the shop opening and insisted that he had never been available.  A statement from him read:  'I had not agreed to attend the opening of this or any other shop today. I had been asked if I would consider the opportunity and declined on two separate occasions.'  It continued 'Any advertising to say I would be attending was made without my knowledge or consent.  I regret any distress or disappointment that may have been suffered by the public.'

Whatever the truth, Reptile Kingdom has received some amazing national press for the opening of a relatively small shop in Surbiton.  It's still worth paying a visit though, especially if you have children.  Just don't look at the spiders!
