Concern for Surbiton's shops as major roadworks continue

Surbiton shopkeepers are rightfully concerned as the latest roadworks hit the centre of Surbiton. This latest set of roadworks will last for up to 10 weeks.

Surbiton shops and businesses take the strain as a further 10 weeks of roadworks begin
Only a month ago we had British Telecom digging up the roads for about a month and it wasn't all that long ago that British Gas spent nearly two months doing the same to replace gas pipes. Whether it was possible to do all of these works at the same time, we don't know. But we are very concerned at the problems these long-term disruptions could cause to the local economy. Local shops, cafes and other businesses thrive on people dropping in to Surbiton for a quick visit. This constant disruption could well cause people not to bother shopping in Surbiton and we know that many local businesses are struggling at the moment as it is.
Kingston Council is undertaking the complete reconstruction of Victoria Road between St Andrew's Road and the Station roundabout. The road will be renewed, the pavements will be widened and the bus stops lengthened.
Apparently once completed this will lead to improved traffic flow along Victoria Road. I'm not convinced about that, but hopefully the flooding that often takes place on the pavements will be sorted after being a problem for many years.
Victoria Road will remain open to shoppers but cars will be limited with a contra-flow in operation directing south-bound traffic via St James' Road, St Phillips' Road and St Andrew's Road, before rejoining Victoria Road.
The two bus stops on Victoria Road (nearest the Station) will be affected by these works – all others will operate as normal. There will be a temporary bus stop at the bottom of St Mark's Hill.
We have been assured that access to the shops will be maintained at all times. We would urge all Surbiton residents to continue shopping and visiting Surbiton Town Centre during these trying times. Support Surbiton's local shops!

UPDATE ON SURBITON ROADWORKS The current works are on target to be completed for mid-September. During the week commencing 5th September there will be some work during the night at the junction of Victoria Road/St Andrews Road and in Victoria Road outside Surbiton Station. There will be changes to the traffic diversion route during this time. From the 5th to the 8th September the bus stop outside Sainsbury's will not be in use and a temporary bus stop will operate around the corner in Brighton Road. On the 5th and 6th September the section of Victoria Road outside Surbiton Station will be replaced during the night. The Station exit will be closed while this work is being carried out.

ReportTo widen the pavement they'll surely need to narrow the road, like Surb_People I can't see how that will improve traffic flow.... unless they get rid of the pay & display spaces on the high street (now that would really affect shops & businesses far beyond this deja vu period of more disruption. Thinking about it, I have see new signs appearing directing traffic to Surbiton's car parks..... Hmmmm.
And as for these mega sized bus stops.... please don't get me started on those and bus lanes.
